QUIDDITCH

Is quidditch for me?

Quidditch is for everyone, but here's a helpful guide to see whether it's right for you.

I LIKE TEAM SPORTS

Great! Quidditch is for you. It's a fast-paced game which relies on teamwork and close cooperation between players, and while there are obviously star players, they're not much use on their own. It's physical, it's intense, and it involves many transferable skills from other sports. Competition takes place across the UK, across Europe, and even across the entire world; quidditch is a truly global sport with frequent high-level competition.

I DON'T LIKE TEAM SPORTS

Great! Quidditch is for you. It's unlike anything else out there, and if traditional team sports leave you cold, quidditch might just light your fire. The small team size and rolling subs mean your contribution can be a mammoth game-long stint or just a couple of minutes depending on what you feel capable of, and the unusual interplay between the quaffle game and bludger game has no real equivalent in other sports.

I DON'T LIKE SPORT CULTURE/I FEEL UNWELCOME IN OTHER SPORTS TEAMS

Great! Quidditch is for you. We're all nerds here, even though some of us are six-foot-five and over a hundred kilos. Now, I might be a biased observer, but the quidditch community is one of the best groups of people you could ever hope to meet. The culture is overwhelmingly one of friendliness, openness, and respect, and anyone is welcome.

If you feel unwelcome in traditional sporting environments because of your gender, sexuality, or anything similar, great! Quidditch is for you. Several of the leading lights in quidditch are LGBTQ*, and any discrimination based on this would run completely contrary to the ideals of quidditch. In addition, the gender rule in quidditch requires each team to always field at least two players whose gender is different to that of the other four players, so the game is not totally dominated by large male players.

I WANT TO SMASH NERDS

Great! Quidditch is for you.*

*Nerds may smash you instead

I DON'T WANT TO PLAY AT ALL

Great! Quidditch is for you. You're welcome to come along and take any number of auxiliary non-playing roles such as photographer, videographer, commentator, first aid, publicist, scout, analyst, general dogsbody, or just supporter. Even if you're not interested or capable of playing, quidditch is a great way to meet new people and make friends, and there's a place for everyone.
