WEREWOLVES CLAIM FIRST VICTORY

25/10/2015 - FRIENDLY
Werewolves of London 150*
London Unspeakables     0

The Werewolves got off to a winning start in the first ever London quidditch derby, coming out 150*-0 winners in our first competitive match. With these two teams destined to clash again at the Southern Cup in November, it was a good opportunity for both clubs to sound each other out - though the Werewolves were boosted by three secondary players who will not be with the team at Southern Cup, and the Unspeakables roster was limited by injuries and absences.

The Werewolves maintained bludger control for long stretches of the match, which was the cornerstone of the victory; Sasha Burgoyne and Nat A'Bear ran a watertight defence, while Phil Sam and Ben Lawrence constantly disrupted the opposing beaters. With the hoops rarely under threat, the Werewolves were free to play an attacking quaffle game, rapidly pulling out of range and never looking likely to let the Unspeakables claw the deficit back. Captain Simon Bidwell was top scorer, with at least five different Werewolves on the scoresheet.

No official player of the match was selected, though there was a strong case for Ben Lawrence, who not only beat well but also scored hoops and caught snitch Chris Thomas, securing the win for the Werewolves. The game was ultimately comfortable for the Werewolves, though as noted above, these will not be the same two sides who will meet at Southern in November. The first derby went the Werewolves' way, but it will not be the last we hear of this rivalry.
